Re-formed in the summer of 2005, Scottish 4-piece Hamper first burst into existence in ’98 at Dundee’s Art College when a singer-less band met Louise McVey – a band-less singer.
Supporting an up-and-coming Snow Patrol, Hamper cut their teeth in the Dundee music scene and for two years also headlined shows in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Graduation then came, bringing with it the reality of life and (eventually) offers of employment, leaving each member to continue exploring music on their own and as part of other experimental projects.
These ventures included Louise establishing a healthy reputation in Ireland's prosperous Art and Folk music scenes, the lads reincarnating themselves with the brief punk/grunge/experiment/detonation “Pignito”, Pete collaborating with various acts such as “The Third Man” and “Grant Macaskill”, and Mark and Gordon continuing to hone their talents with solo work in the twilight hours.
The summer of 2005 found Louise enquiring as to the possibility of Hamper getting back together and giving it another go. There was no hesitation from the original line-up (now all living in different cities in Scotland) despite the obvious obstacles in reforming. From the beginning Hamper had been a band formed around its musical camaraderie – and far from being dulled by the intervening years this chemistry was as strong as ever, producing fresh and exciting material. The band meet regularly in Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh have recorded in Aberdeen. Representing the whole of Scotland, the band has embarked on two Easter tours, of Ireland in 2006, and the Outer Hebrides in 2007, both riotous adventures…
Now firm favourites on Tay FM's 'Weekender' show, Hamper – exploiting their appetite for Live performances and healthy opportunism – have had airplay on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal, in Canada and the USA. They are described as:
“Dundee’s own slice of 80’s influenced Americana with songs ranging from perfumed addiction to reflective, this is a band that can write and sing to perfection.”

- Split-single 7" vinyl release on North Pole Records featuring the band's majestic “Nice Dress”.
- Contribution to ‘An audiological guide to the music of Dundee’ CD for which Hamper recorded an extended version of their popular live track “Comfort Cake”.
Recently:
- A reworked and succinct “Comfort Cake” released as a demo.
- Self-financed single “Lullaby” and video by award winning film maker Sven Werner
Hamper are also half-way through the recording of an album which is sure to put them amongst the finest alternative rock acts to come out of Scotland. |
